So you’ve decided to start a blog. I want to first say congratulations. What ever your reason for wanting to start a blog (hobby, business, earn extra income) blogging is a fantastic way to share your knowledge, writing and experiences with thousands of people.

Today you’re going to go through your first tutorial to start a blog. You’ll be selecting and purchasing the domain name for your new blog.

What is a Domain Name?

Your domain name for your new blog is the equivalent to the street address for you home. It’s the address you’ll share with people when you want to tell them how to visit your blog.

The domain name for this site is HowToStartABlogVideos.com

Some people also refer to this as the URL for their blog.

How to Choose A Domain Name

There are no hard and fast rules for selecting a domain name, but I have a few pointers that I think you should consider.

  • Go for a .com domain name unless you are only wanting readers and visitors from a particular geographic area. Example: If you’re only concerned with receiving visitors and readers from Canada then you can opt to purchase a .ca domain name which is country specific to Canada. Other countries also have their own specific domain extension.
  • Try to avoid using numbers in your domain name. When you tell some one the address of your blog and there’s a number in it then it can be confusing for people to know well did they mean the number 4 or the word ‘four’.
  • Avoid Hyphens when at all possible since people will never remember to type them in if you’re telling them the domain name to visit for your new blog.
  • Be descriptive and creative if possible. So if your new blog is about carrying for your vegetable or flower gardens at home a name like GreenGardenGal.com would be great.

In the end it’s up to you what name you choose for your new blog, but do put a bit of time into this step. You can change a name later on, but as your blog becomes more and more popular you will not want to take the chance of losing readers and visitors later on by changing the domain name of your blog.
