So by now you have your new domain registered at GoDaddy.com and you’ve setup your website hosting with HostGator.com. If you haven’t done those two steps yet you should go back and watch Tutorial 1 on choosing and registering your domain name and then Tutorial 2 on choosing and setting up your web hosting for your new blog.

In this tutorial we have to change our name servers for our domain at Godaddy.com to the Name Servers supplied to us by HostGator for our new blog.

What’s a Name Server?

Without getting into a really technical explanation, a Name Server is what tells GoDaddy.com to “point” or “direct” your new domain name to the server space over at HostGator.com that you’re renting. It’s kind of like your house or apartments street address.

By changing the Name Servers for our domain at GoDaddy.com people will be able to type in our domain name into their Internet browser and they will be directed to our blog which is hosted (stored) on a server at Host Gator.

I hope that makes some sense. The concept of how Name Servers, IP addresses etc. work can be confusing so we’ll just leave it at that for now.

Changing Your Name Servers

You should have recieved an email from HostGator.com after signing up for you account. In this email should be your username, password and also two name servers.

Mine were:

  • 1st Nameserver: ns3427.hostgator.com
  • 2nd Nameserver: ns3428.hostgator.com

Yours may be the same or different. It depends what server you are on as to which name servers you’re assigned.

So copy and paste these from that email into a notepad or textedit document as we’ll need them in a moment over at GoDaddy.com.

Next go to GoDaddy.com and login using the username and password you setup in Tutorial 1 when registering your domain. The login space is at the very top of the page.

Once you login you need to ‘mouse over’ (place and hold your mouse but don’t click any buttons) over the first link in the top navigation bar that says DOMAINS.

When you hover your mouse over a new drop down menu appears. You need to click on Domain Management. This will open an entirely new window where we can modify our domain name.

NOTE: This is fully explained in the video and I walk you through changing your name servers.

Once you’re inside GoDaddy you want to click on the new domain you registered. This will again bring you to a new screen that lists all of the domains information.

What’ we’re concerned with is under the Nameservers heading. There’s a blue link that says SET NAMESERVERS, click that link and a new window will pop up.

In this new window there will be four options, choose the last one “I have specific nameservers for my domains.” This will give you four boxes to enter name servers. You’re only concerned with the first two. So highlight the first Nameserver 1 box and delete the text that’s already there. Copy and paste the first name server from your text file into that box. Do the same for the second name server and then click OK.

In this screen shot I have already added in my Name Servers.

A new window will pop-up that says it can take upto 48 hours for the changes to take effect.

That’s it you’re done. You’ve successfully changed the nameservers for your new blogs domain. As the message says this can take up to a day or two, but most times it’s complete within a couple of hours.

To see how to check when it’s ready you can go a head and move on to Tutorial 4.
