Creating your first WordPress posts and pages isn’t tough. In the above video tutorial I walk you through where to go and what to do.

Writing a post is as simple as:

  1. Logging into your WordPress admin.
  2. On the left hand side bar click the Posts button, then click the add new button that appears below.
  3. Enter the title and text for your new post in the provided text area.
  4. Hit the publish button on the right hand side beside the text area.

That’s the very basics of creating a new WordPress post. However there are a few things that I suggest you do as well that will enhance your blogging experience and your readers.

Write Posts Locally

I say this in the video tutorial, and I’ll say it again here. I always write my blog posts in a text editor on my computer (In fact I’m writing this one now inside Note Pad on my Mac).

I then save the post to a local folder where I keep all my blog posts. I then copy and paste the content I write in the Text Editor on my computer to the text window inside WordPress.

This serves two purposes.

  1. I have a backup of all my posts I’ve ever written should I need them
  2. It saves me from not losing all my work should my Internet browser freeze while I’m writing inside wordpress or my login times out.

Get in the habit of doing this, you’ll be happy you did if you ever run into a problem.

Use Categories

WordPress allows you to organize your posts by categories. In the video tutorial I show you how to add a category when creating your first post, however it’s not always required that you add a new category.

If you’re writing a post that fits into a category you’ve already created at some point then I’d suggest just going ahead and adding the new post to the old category.

Categories allow your readers to easily find all your posts on a particular topic quickly and easily. Also as you begin to create more and more posts on your blog using good categories makes it easy for you to find older posts that you may want to update or reference in the future.
